Early life
María Valverde Rodríguez was born on March 24, 1987, in Carabanchel, a district in the southwestern suburbs of Madrid, Spain. She was raised in Madrid by her foster parents with an older brother and a younger sister about whom much information is not published. At an early age of 6, María developed an interest in acting, and thereafter her mother enrolled her at a theatre school. She was also a member of her school drama troupe and later she went to Cristina Rota School of Dramatic Arts for pursuing her career in acting.

María got interested in acting from a very young age, her mom even enrolled her in an acting school. Her first appearance was seen when she was selected from among 3,000 other candidates auditioning for Manuel Martin Cuenca’s film La Flaqueza del Bolchevique which is also known as The Weakness of the Bolshevik in English. For this film, she portrayed the lead role of Maria. The film was premiered in 2003 and she was 16 years of age at that time. Her debut earned her the Best New Actress Award at the 18th Goya Awards in 2004.
Subsequently, she went on receiving many scripts and roles and was seen in Spanish film Body Confusion in 2004, in 2005 Vorvik and erotic drama Melissa P where she played the lead of Melissa Panarello. In 2006 she was seen in Spanish–Italian film Los Borgia or ‘The Borgia’ in English along with Paz Vega. She played the role of Lucrezia Borgia. María also worked with actor Leonardo Sbaraglia for the thriller The King of the Mountain in 2007 where she appeared as Bea. The same year she also made her appearance in films as Sara in Thieves and Lola in The Sandman.
Throughout these years she is seen in many Spanish short films, soon after this, she did her first English film in 2009 and made her debut with psychological thriller Cracks. Valverde was quite known in the Spanish entertainment industry; she was seen in the lead for Fernando Gonzalez directed movie Metros Sobre el Cieloor Three Steps above Heaven where she portrayed the role of Babi opposite Mario Casas. In 2012 the sequel for this film named Tengo Ganas de Ti was released where she played the same role.
Furthermore, in 2011, she played the role of a journalism student named Angela in film Madrid, 1987. The film was premiered at the 2011 San Sebastian International Film Festival. Aaprt from this, she was also seen in A Puerta Fría as Inés, Conchi in The Mule and as Maria Theresa Bolivar in 2003’s historical drama The Liberator. The same year she debuted on television also as Anna Serra in La Fuga and portrayed Virginia Rodriguez in 2013’s Hermanos.
Her notable work was seen in the epic biblical film, Exodus: Gods and Kings which was released globally. She played Zipporah in this film working with Christian Bale, Ben Kingsley, and Sigourney Weaver. From 2015 to 2016 she featured in almost 7 films including her famous roles in, Broken Horses the English remake of Bollywood film Parinda. She played the lead role of Vittoria. Then seen in a British war film, Ali and Nino as Nino Kipiani, Teresa in the romantic film Guernica and as Aveline Ortega in the British horror film The Limehouse Golem.
In 2017 María appeared in Back to Burgundy as Alicia and Melanie Laurent’s movie Plonger as Paz Aguilera. The Canadian-Chinese film featured her as Paiva in 400 Boys in 2018. Recently Valverde was seen in Spider as Young Ines and soon in the coming years, she will be also seen in Fever Dream and Across the River and Into the Trees.
